Unique Piece – 1/1 The Greek word sphinx is a transliteration of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyph shesep-ankh (šsp-ꜥnḫ), meaning “living image.” The Sphinx is believed to represent Atum, the primordial deity according to Heliopolitan theology, as established in the Pyramid Texts. The most common and indeed canonical name for the Sphinx was Hr-m-ꜥḫt, or Horemakhet, meaning “Horus in the Horizon,” a title uniquely attributed to the Sphinx. The name of the Sphinx thus reflects its divine nature. The Sphinx was not seen by the ancient Egyptians as a monument in the same sense as the pyramids. Rather, it was regarded as the physical manifestation, or even the living embodiment, of a nṯr, an otherworldly being. This aspect is affirmed by the most remarkable ancient sources — including the Inventory Stele, the Great Limestone Stele of Amenhotep II, the Dream Stele, and possibly even the Narmer Palette — which show that the ancient Egyptians believed the Sphinx to be far older than the pyramids themselves. It was also thought to be the guardian of deep and ancient wisdom. And the temples of the Sphinx complex — referred to as The Sphinx’s Document — are in fact the supreme knowledge of Thoth (or Hermes Trismegistus) who is said to have foretold: “O holy books, who have been made by my immortal hands, by incorruption's magic spells… free from decay and incorrupt from time! Become unseeable, for every one whose foot shall tread the plains of this our land, until old Heaven doth bring forth meet instruments for you, whom the Creator shall call souls” (Kore Kosmou, Corpus Hermeticum).
